Friday Shoot-out: fences

I really like how there are bluebird houses along the path where John and I often run the dogs. Sometimes they actually have bluebirds in them, but other birds like them too, as you can see!

  1. Great photo! AND, I am thinking Rule of Thirds and Rule of Space. Oh, yea :)

What kind of bird is that, anyway?

  2. oooooh Libby you are so RIGHT. I read both of Rebecca's posts on that, and tried to crop the photo so it would work. She gives such good advice.

It's a swallow, I think, but I meant to look up what kind.

  4. Beautiful shot, Kerry. What a lovely idea to have little homes for birds along a path. Your swallow is quite different in colouring from ours - very pretty!

  5. don't know why but would guess that the birdhouses along the trail are for research.... this one is number 15 - if you were just wanting to atract birds would you number the house.... great shot and definitly meets the photo lessons criteria.

  6. Get work Kerry. I agree with GingerV we have red bags tacked on the woods around here for bug research and they are numbered. I follow them on my weekly route into the woods and notice them moved around sometimes. Rebecca has sure helped me out. And Ginger too. I have learned a lot.

  7. Haha Peggy! "Get work" is awesome! And yes these birdhouses are watched carefully by an organization dedicated to increasing the bluebird population. They have volunteers who count the nesting pairs and the number of eggs and babies, plus they band quite a few individuals. I don't think swallows are popular with them.

  8. Simple but very effective, how on earth do birds sit on thin slippery wire without twiddling round it and ending upside down?
Sorry, the thought came and I typed...

  9. I thought it is a letter box, do the birds come back to the same one the next year?

  10. They do come back, but not always to the same box. Sometimes a swallow beats them to it, just like this rascal.

  12. Great shot and such a nice place for the birds to hang out. I've never seen that before so I think is really cool.

  13. Ah yes - birds see fences simply as places to sit. Lucky birds.

  14. Yes, they are popular with the other birds.

  15. That's beautiful. When we lived in the country we had boxes out for them, and always had at least one family.
